Interview with Mamie Coker, an educator in Laurens County, S.C.; attended Christian Hope School, Sunset Park dormitory school, Friendship College in Rock Hill, S.C.(graduated 1937), and Benedict College in Columbia, S.C.(all African American schools); taught at Mt. Carmel (an African American elementary school) in Laurens County and Gray Court School (an African American elementary and high school), where her husband was principle; the first African American teacher to work at Hickory Tavern, the white elementary school in Laurens County [ca. 1950s]; African American students were not allowed in her class her first year at Hickory Tavern; left after 5 years to become principle at Pleasantview elementary school in Laurens County.
